The morning after the night before

For me, a fancy ball with an open bar inevitably leads to a sensational hangover. I woke up today, last night’s make up in tact but now looking positively demonic, covered in banana chips and a lingering sense of shame. The kitchen was a no-go: brunch was, really, the only option.

Drugstore Espresso on Toorak Road is my new favourite place (I say this every time, but I reckon this time I mean it.) Situated just by South Yarra station, we didn’t have to face the outside world for too long before we could sit down and eat in peace. It’s a shame my friends and I were looking so rough, because the staff here are unreasonably good looking and their service was great as well. The café itself is small, but manages to feel very open and spacious by means of the lower level spreading out on to the street and nice aesthetic touches like the wall of potted plants. Upstairs, there are only a handful of tables crowded together, which always seem to be full, and for good reason. I am so used to having only one or two GF options on a menu, that the extensive list of incredible brunch options was almost distressing in my fragile state. Luckily, I got over myself and settled on the GF buttermilk hotcakes. It’s fair to say they were life-changing. The combination of blueberries, pistachios and maple syrup was just what I needed to cure my wine/gin/silliness induced hell. Fresh grapefruit, apple, celery and mint juice, (affectionately?) named Gang Green, came in a little hipster jug, and the filter coffee just about stopped me from falling asleep at the table (I ordered way too many times, just to see the waiters up close. Creep.) On the way out, one of the guys informed me that all the display cakes were GF, so I took an inordinately large, gooey salted caramel brownie away with me to help with the inevitable mid-afternoon hangover wave.

I don’t know if it’s the extravagant food, brilliant coffee or stupidly attractive staff that make this place so successful, but either way, Drugstore is a new firm favourite. I walk past this place on my way to work, and I’m pretty sure I’ll be a regular soon enough.
