I was going to caption this “Vegie Bar… Ledgie Bar,” considering we were marking both the departure of a legend and the meeting of one in Jiordan Tolli – but the last supper was probably more appropriate. Last night was Jemma’s last in Farrer and in Melbourne for a while, so Jem, Rosa and I went to Vegie Bar in Fitzroy for a final dinner.
Vegie Bar does what it says on the tin – it’s a vegetarian restaurant which caters for every dietary requirement in the book. (There’s a sign which tells the staff to be extra careful with allergies: “We do not want somebody to die.” It’s very reassuring.) The staff are as edgy as you would expect in the Brunswick area, and all nice and helpful.
Even the drinks offered have a twist: my vodka and tonic came with homemade ginger tonic, and went perfectly with my spicy peanut and cauliflower curry. It’s the second curry I’ve had this week (Babu Ji in St Kilda delivered an amazing GF fish curry), but this one had an oriental twist with the peanut satay flavour.
It wasn’t our first trip to Vegie Bar, and it definitely won’t be the last – we need to go back to try the tofu tostadas, vegan nachos and raw cheesecake. Come back soon, Jemma! I need you in case Rosa meets another celebrity…
This is one place I’ll definitely be taking my family when they arrive in a few weeks. It’s already decorated for Christmas…
